A drink-driver was arrested at over three times legal limit on Saturday morning, Newry police have said.

Officers found the driver behind the wheel of a parked car on the city’s Hill Street at around 10.15am “attempting to compose a text message with great difficulty” while the vehicle was running with “smoke coming from the bonnet”.

The driver was breathalysed, stated local police, and gave an initial reading of 124 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

According to a post place on social media by officers: “The driver was arrested and is currently assisting police with enquiries in custody.

“Our thanks go to the members of the public who reported this incident.

“The message remains the same – never ever drink and drive.”

Area PSNI officers were also out in the Mourne mountains over the weekend, conducting speed and vehicle stop checks.

The checks, said Newry, Mourne and Down police, were part of an “ongoing campaign to make our roads safer” through ‘Operation Seasons Greetings’ and ‘Operation Limit’.

Operation Season’s Greetings is the police’s annual Christmas campaign, which sees the force step up patrols across Northern Ireland in shopping areas, nightlife venues and public transport hubs to deter criminal activity, reassure the public, and support local businesses. It also tackles road safety initiatives.

Operation Limit, launched at the start of December, is a crackdown on drink-driving. Stated Newry, Mourne and Down PSNI: “Never take the risk of driving under the influence of alcohol, even on the day after having some drinks you may still be over the limit so please drink responsibly.”
