Case Explained:This article breaks down the legal background, charges, and implications of Case Explained: Charity event held by Ellis Jones Solicitors on cyber crime – Legal Perspective
Representatives of more than 25 charities and non-profit organisations attended the event, organised by Ellis Jones Solicitors in Bournemouth, to hear from experts on cyber security risks and best practice.
George Complin, principal consultant at Poole-based IT and telecoms provider Grapevine, outlined why the sector is becoming a growing target for cyber criminals.

Mr Complin said: “Charities hold valuable data but may operate with more limited cybersecurity resources compared to better-resourced private companies.”
His talk covered practical strategies for safeguarding information, recognising common attacks and building a culture of security awareness.
Other topics addressed during the seminar included AI-powered scams, ransomware, phishing attacks, unauthorised data breaches, website hacks, insurance cover, supplier risks and unregulated device policies.
The event, held at the Marsham Court Hotel, brought together charities working in areas including mental health, marine rescue, heritage and palliative care.
James Trevis, cyber and technology portfolio manager for insurer NFU Mutual, discussed insurance cover and the process of handling a cyber claim.
Ellis Jones’ own team also contributed, including managing partner Nigel Smith, partner and solicitor Kate Brooks, partner and solicitor Victoria Riddleston, and senior associate Rosemary Drew.
Mr Smith said: “This event was especially relevant given the rise in AI and other new cyber crime vulnerabilities.
“How best to derisk cybersecurity and ensure robust data protection will become an ever more vital consideration for charities and third-sector organisations just as it is in the commercial world.”
Ellis Jones has run charity seminars since 2017, tailoring each session to current issues affecting the sector and requests from attendees.
Past events have covered topics such as trustee responsibilities, governance, staff and volunteer rights, tax matters, legacy disputes, and investment decisions.
Ellis Jones offers guidance and resources for charities through its website and mailing list.
