Two senior Supreme Court lawyers have emerged as frontrunners for appointment as the new Attorney General of Bangladesh, the country’s chief legal officer. They are Senior Advocate Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Barrister Ragib Rauf Chowdhury.

Sources in the Law Ministry indicate that a gazette notification for the appointment could be issued as early as this week.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, a resident of Moheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah, previously served multiple terms as Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Barrister Ragib Rauf Chowdhury, from Kushtia, is the son of the late Abdur Rauf Chowdhury, a prominent organizer of the Language Movement and Liberation War. He completed his SSC from Kushtia Zilla School, HSC from Dhaka Notre Dame College, and earned an Honors and Master’s degree in Political Science from Aligarh Muslim University and Dhaka University respectively. He later obtained law degrees from two UK universities and was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn, London. He has consistently advocated for proper application of law and establishment of good governance.

The current Attorney General, Md. Asaduzzaman, resigned on 27 December citing personal reasons and submitted his resignation to the President. He contested and won a seat in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election and has since taken oath as Law Minister.
