In a major step towards modern policing, Maharashtra has strengthened its AI-based crime investigation initiative with a ₹2 crore fund allocation. The pilot project, being implemented by Nagpur Rural Police, uses an advanced AI platform called MahacrimeOS to assist in solving complex cases such as cybercrime, financial fraud, narcotics offences, and sexual crimes. The platform was launched earlier in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and is now proposed for expansion across the state.

Built on Microsoft’s CrimeOS and customized for Maharashtra, the system integrates investigation SOPs and legal guidelines, enabling step-by-step assistance from FIR registration to case progress. It also helps generate official documents using AI copilots, making investigations faster and more structured. So far, 133 officers have been trained and 287 cases handled under the project, with notable success in tracking interstate fraud cases and recovering lost money. Officials say this marks the beginning of large-scale automation in policing.
