Home-based businesses are the backbone of Nillumbik’s economy, and support local jobs, local spending, and community resilience.

Nillumbik’s Home-Based Business Economy 2025 Report provides an in-depth look at the experiences, challenges and aspirations of local home-based business entrepreneurs.

Key findings include:

  • 62 per cent of operators rely on their business as their primary source of income
  • 48 per cent expect profit growth in the next 12 months
  • 58 per cent of those planning to relocate want to stay in Nillumbik, citing lifestyle, community ties and loyal local customers
  • Nearly one third want to develop new skills to help them grow

Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said the report shines a light on an important but often under-recognised part of the local economy.

“This research shows that our home-based businesses are a key contributor to our economy creating local jobs and contributing to our community’s prosperity,” Cr Joiner said.

“Nillumbik’s entrepreneurs are building remarkable opportunities right here where we live and Council is committed to helping them thrive.”

Cr Joiner said the insights will help Council strengthen programs and events that connect, educate and support local business owners.

“Some operators told us that they can feel isolated working from a home office. We want to change that by creating opportunities to connect and grow, such as our upcoming Home-Based Business Forum, designed specifically for this large cohort of business owners,” Cr Joiner said.

“Supporting these businesses strengthens the Shire’s long term economic health and helps future proof the community as work patterns continue to evolve.”
