Madurai: Advanced targeted and precision therapies that act selectively on cancer cells and spare healthy tissue have significantly improved treatment tolerability, outcomes and survival rates of adult and paediatric patients with blood cancers, according to doctors at the department of adult haematology and paediatric oncology at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre. They were speaking to reporters in connection with World Cancer Day.Dr T Kasi Viswanathan, senior consultant and HOD – hemato-oncology, said five of seven patients they treated with targeted therapy are alive and leading healthy lives. Among children aged one to 18 years, use of immunotherapies such as inotuzumab and blinatumomab enabled four of five children having refractory acute leukaemia to achieve remission and thrive, he said. Dr V Anitha, paediatric hemato-oncologist, put the overall survival outcome at around 80%. Dr V S Venkateswaran, paediatric hemato-oncologist, said about 20% of children require bone marrow transplantation, which they performed with outcomes ranging from 70% to 80%.
