Breaking News:Spotify wants to bring this long-overdue feature to Android– What Just Happened

Breaking Update: Here’s a clear explanation of the latest developments related to Breaking News:Spotify wants to bring this long-overdue feature to Android– What Just Happened and why it matters right now.

Spotify’s mobile apps come equipped with most of the features you find in its desktop/web versions. There are some notable holdouts, though, such as the creation and management of Playlist folders. This feature lets listeners organize their library more efficiently by grouping playlists into folders and subfolders.

While Spotify listeners can view these folders in the mobile apps, the ability to edit or create new ones has been exclusively available on the desktop client. It’s been over a decade and a half since the feature’s introduction, and it looks like Spotify is finally laying the groundwork for the rollout of Playlist folders on the Android app.

In version 9.1.34.12 of the Spotify app, Android Authority has found code that sheds light on how Playlist folders will work on mobile. Some of the code reveals common menu items, including the ability to create a new folder and give it a name.

Additionally, users will also be able to rename or delete entire folders, which will remove all the playlists inside them. Given that the latter action removes all of your organized playlists, it will prompt a warning that reads “Do you really want to delete this folder and all playlist inside?”

The wait has been way too long

Additional lines of code reveal that Spotify will also facilitate the easy moving of playlists between folders and your library without ever leaving the Android app.

Since we’re only seeing lines of code so far and no visuals of the feature, we presume an official rollout may not be on the cards anytime in the near future. Still, users can take solace in the fact that Spotify is finally going to remedy a longstanding shortcoming of the Android app.

As Android Authority rightly notes, this feature will be welcomed by users who predominantly use Spotify on their Android smartphones and have little or no access to a desktop.

This is a game-changer for music lovers everywhere

There have been some remedies for mobile users so far, such as opening Spotify on a smartphone browser and loading the desktop version of the site to access some of these restricted tools. Thankfully, some of these workarounds can be put to rest soon, as Playlist folders gradually make their way to the Android app.

Given the factors we mentioned above, it’s hard to say when this feature will roll out to Spotify users, though we hope the wait isn’t too long, as nearly 16 years seems like a long time.
