US President Donald Trump on Monday shared a photograph of New Delhi’s India Gate on his social media platform Truth Social, praising the monument as a “beautiful triumphal arch.”
“India’s beautiful triumphal arch, our will be greatest of all,” Trump wrote alongside the image.
The post comes at a time when Trump is pushing ahead with an ambitious plan to build a massive new triumphal arch in Washington DC to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
According to a report in The Washington Post, Trump has grown attached to the idea of constructing a 250-foot-tall structure overlooking the Potomac River. The proposed monument, tentatively named the Independence Arch, would be significantly larger than many of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks.
Trump reiterated his ambition for the project while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday.
“I’d like it to be the biggest one of all,” President Trump said, stressing that the monument should reflect America’s global stature.
The Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France – which Trump has repeatedly cited as an inspiration and vowed to surpass by “a lot” – stands 164 feet high. The largest memorial arch in the world, located in Mexico City, measures about 220 feet.
“We’re the biggest, most powerful nation,” he added, in remarks quoted by The Washington Post.
The White House stands about 70 feet tall, while the Lincoln Memorial is roughly 100 feet. The arch envisioned by Trump would eclipse both, transforming a small plot of land between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery into a dominant new feature of the city’s skyline.
The newspaper said that the US President has personally insisted on the scale of the project.
‘Considered Smaller Versions’
Trump has also considered smaller versions of the proposed arch, including designs measuring 165 feet and 123 feet in height, which he reportedly shared at a dinner last year. However, The Washington Post said in its report that the president has favoured the largest 250-foot option, arguing that its sheer size would impress visitors to Washington. The newspaper added that Trump believes a height of “250 for 250″ would be the most fitting way to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Trump has also suggested an ambitious timeline for the project. In December, he told Politico that he hoped construction of the arch could begin within two months.
However, that schedule appears unlikely, as White House officials have yet to release final design plans or submit them to the necessary federal review panels.
The proposed site for the monument, Memorial Circle, is controlled by the National Park Service, meaning any construction would require multiple layers of approval.
