In a tragic incident, one person was killed, and four others were injured in a nitrogen gas blast near Amba Vilas Palace in Karnataka’s Mysuru, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar said on Thursday.
The incident took place near the exhibition ground, close to the Jaya Marthanda Gate of the historic palace, when a balloon vendor was filling balloons using a helium gas cylinder.
A large number of people had arrived for the exhibition due to the Christmas vacation.
While inflating a balloon, the gas cylinder used to fill balloons exploded, triggering scenes of panic, with people screaming and running in distress on the busy road, news agency PTI reported.
The force of the blast was severe, causing severe injuries to those present at the site.
The balloon seller, identified as 40-year-old Saleem, a native of Tofiya village in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh, was killed on the spot. He used to sell balloons in front of the palace on a regular basis.
As per preliminary findings, Saleem was travelling on a bicycle fitted with a helium cylinder, which was being used to inflate balloons at the time of the blast.
Meanwhile, four others, including a woman, suffered injuries. The injured, identified as Lakshmi from Bengaluru, Manjula from Nanjangud, Shahina Shebar from Kolkata, and Kotresh Gutte from Ranebennur, were rushed to KR Hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, police cordoned off the palace premises and launched a probe to ascertain the exact cause of the blast.
