A wildfire that erupted in Southern California’s Riverside County on Friday was largely under control by Saturday afternoon, fire authorities reported. Dubbed the Springs Fire, the blaze initially threatened homes and prompted several evacuation orders.
The fire spanned roughly 16 square kilometres east of Los Angeles, and was 75% contained, according to Terra Fernandez from the Riverside County Fire Department. The containment efforts were buoyed by calming winds, allowing for more effective control strategies.
Fire crews utilized aerial water drops and built containment lines bolstered by the area’s natural equestrian trails. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and while a few zones still have mandatory evacuation orders, much of the threatened region was deemed safe by Saturday morning.
