A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported on Friday.
Powerful tremors reverberated across major cities, shaking Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, Afghanistan’s Kabul, and India’s New Delhi, according to eyewitnesses. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 177 kilometers, GFZ stated.
No immediate casualties were reported, but Afghanistan, surrounded by rugged mountains, is susceptible to lethal natural disasters. The nation’s earthquakes result in substantial loss of life annually, averaging 560 deaths. A previous 6.3-magnitude quake in November caused 27 fatalities and widespread destruction.
