Health Update: Health Update: Black Family Wellness Expo returns to Wichita, promotes health awareness for second year – What Experts Say– What Experts Say.
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Black Family Wellness Expo returned to Wichita on Saturday for its second year, bringing awareness to both mental and physical health across the community.
The free event featured panels on various topics for men and women, along with several free health screenings aimed at improving access to care.
Organizers say more than 40 different vendors participated in the expo, offering resources and services designed to connect residents with support systems, especially for those who may not have health insurance.
“Maybe there’s a sliding scale, you know, maybe you have to pay 10 dollars for a visit”, said Dr. Anthony Shawn, a Wichita psychiatrist and event panelist. “So there’s a bunch of different opportunities and areas for people that might not have access to resources, they got resources from at this event.”
Event leaders emphasized the importance of addressing overall well-being, including mental, physical and emotional health.
“Your mental health, your physical health, your emotional health. So we were looking at the whole family aspect, and we had something here for everyone,” said Carla Breckenridge, the chair of the Black Family Wellness Expo.
The event also included additional services such as haircuts. Organizers say they are already looking ahead to making next year’s expo even bigger.
