Guwahati: Amid the election heat in Assam, a shootout in Morigaon district on Friday triggered public concern and prompted an immediate investigation by Assam Police. Officials said the accused has been arrested and is currently in custody. The incident took place in Lahorighat town under the jurisdiction of the Barchalla outpost. Police identified the arrested person as Abdul Mannan (25), a resident of Silchar in Cachar district.A crime branch officer said the incident was not politically motivated but stemmed from a business rivalry involving parties from both Cachar and Morigaon districts. “The dispute involved four persons — two from Cachar and two from Morigaon. It arose from a failed money deal, which led to the shootout. We suspect these people are linked to the narcotics trade,” the officer said. During the arrest, police recovered a .32 pistol along with three live rounds of ammunition from Mannan.A case has been registered under sections of the BNS Act, and Mannan will be produced before the local court. “We are investigating further to identify others involved in the incident. More details will be shared once the case is cracked,” the officer added.
