Cyclone Narelle, a formidable category four system, made landfall in remote areas of Far North Queensland with winds reaching up to 195 kph (120 mph). Queensland Premier David Crisafulli advised residents of potential flooding and significant damage while emphasizing safety precautions.
Meanwhile, resource giant Rio Tinto halted operations at two bauxite mines due to safety concerns. Recovery efforts are planned as the cyclone is expected to weaken before intensifying again as it moves toward the Northern Territory.
