As the Easter holidays approach, here is the current guidelines on travel to Turkey

As tensions continue in the Middle East involving the US, Israel and Iran, it’s understandable that some travellers are taking a closer look at their plans, especially with the Easter holidays coming up.

With headlines focusing on the region, questions about travel safety have naturally come into holidaymakers’ minds. Turkey has long been a favourite for British tourists and families, due to its mix of beautiful beaches, historic cities and unique landscapes.

While the country shares an eastern land border with Iran, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) continues to classify Turkey as generally safe for travel.

That said, the FCDO notes that regional tensions have created “significant security risks and have led to travel disruption” in certain areas, mainly near the borders with neighbouring countries.

Turkey’s eastern borders also touch Syria and Iraq and Cyprus is just to the south. Despite this proximity, the country’s main tourist destinations – including Cappadocia and Antalya – are far removed from any conflict zones and continue to welcome visitors safely everyday.

The FCDO advises against all travel within 10km of the border with Syria due to ongoing fighting. Beyond that, the message from the officials is largely one of vigilance.

On its website, the FCDO notes: “Most incidents have occurred in southeast Turkey, Ankara and Istanbul. You should remain aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.”

For the rest of the country, the guidance is similar to travelling anywhere in Europe, such as staying alert, enjoying your surroundings, and following local guidance.

Are flights to Turkey cancelled?

Flights between the UK and Turkey are operating normally. While some disruption affects routes elsewhere in the Middle East due to airspace restrictions, major Turkish airports – including those in Istanbul, Antalya, Bodrum and Izmir – remain open and running their usual schedules.

No cancellations linked to regional developments have been reported, and airlines continue to operate as usual.

Brits travelling to Turkey during the Easter break are being told to stay up to date with the latest advice from the airline you are due to travel with as well as checking flight details just before leaving for the airport.

Can I cancel my holiday?

For those considering cancelling a trip, there are no special arrangements for a full refund, as the FCDO has not advised against non-essential travel. Travel conditions will depend on your provider, so it’s worth contacting your travel agent to discuss flexibility.

While refunds may not be available, many companies can offer date changes, alternative destinations or a combination of both.

Overall, while the wider region is experiencing a period of uncertainty, travel to Turkey itself remains largely unaffected.

For most holidaymakers, it’s simply a case of staying informed, planning ahead and enjoying their trip with the usual common sense precautions.
