“Sports-led travel is becoming much more intentional today, with travellers planning their trips around major sporting calendars instead of treating events as an add-on to a holiday,” says Aman Naagar, Managing Director at Avis India. According to him, travel demand is increasingly aligned with match schedules, with earlier bookings and greater demand for reliable mobility on key event days.

“Cricket has long united the country in spirit, and we’re now seeing that same energy translating into travel,” explains Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, Country Head for India and Southeast Asia at Airbnb.
He notes that fans are increasingly travelling with friends and family, extending their stays and exploring destinations beyond the stadium. Accommodation choices are also evolving, with many travellers opting for shared homes that allow groups to stay together and experience neighbourhoods more authentically. This shift highlights how cultural moments can reshape tourism patterns and create meaningful economic impact for local communities.

“Today’s travellers are not just visiting destinations; they are seeking a seamless fusion of sporting passion and refined hospitality,” says Anjali Mehra, Executive Vice President – Brand and Communications at The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts.
She points to experiences such as exclusive meet-and-greets with sporting legends and high-profile tournaments hosted by the brand. For instance, a special interaction with Lionel Messi at The Leela Palace New Delhi allowed guests to connect with one of football’s most celebrated icons in a luxurious setting. According to Mehra, this approach reflects a broader shift toward conscious luxury, where travel is defined by meaningful moments rather than just destinations.

Another notable trend is the evolving profile of sports tourists. Naagar notes that what was once dominated by young fan groups now includes families, corporate travellers and mixed-age groups. He explains, “Many attendees are extending their visits for leisure, business or local exploration, turning a single event into a longer, multi-purpose trip. This shift is also driving greater demand for seamless mobility, accommodation and curated experiences that allow travellers to navigate busy host cities with ease.”
