The Bank of England is set to introduce a new series of banknotes featuring images of native wildlife. This marks a departure from the traditional representation of historical figures such as William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.
According to Victoria Cleland, the BoE’s chief cashier, nature offers an appealing option for banknote authentication while showcasing the UK’s diverse wildlife, providing a fresh perspective on national currency design. Despite the shift toward nature, the portrait of King Charles will remain on the upcoming notes.
Following a public consultation in July 2025, where 60% of 44,000 responses favored a nature theme, the BoE is planning another round of consultations focusing on specific wildlife selections. This move highlights a broader effort to incorporate public opinion into currency design, reflecting changing societal values.
