Indonesian authorities have concluded rescue operations at the Bantargebang landfill, where a collapse killed seven people. All individuals present at the site have been accounted for, according to an official statement on Tuesday.
The disaster struck on Sunday when a heavy downpour caused a mountain of garbage to collapse at Indonesia’s largest landfill. Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the local rescue agency, confirmed the recovery of the last victim, bringing the death toll to seven. Six people survived the tragic incident.
More than 200 rescuers, armed with excavators and thermal drones, conducted a thorough search operation. The casualties included truck drivers and owners of food stalls working at the landfill. Bantargebang receives between 6,500 to 7,000 tons of waste daily, underscoring the site’s immense scale and operational challenge.
