In 2025-26, India witnessed the generation of over 14 lakh metric tonnes of e-waste, out of which an impressive 9.79 lakh metric tonnes underwent recycling, according to Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. This was disclosed in the Lok Sabha on Monday during a session that focused on waste management strategies.
The data, sourced from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), also included historical figures showcasing the upward trend in e-waste management. In the year 2024-25, over 13.97 lakh metric tonnes of e-waste was produced, recycling over 11.59 lakh metric tonnes. Similarly, for the year 2023-24, the country generated 12.54 lakh metric tonnes and recycled 7.78 lakh metric tonnes of waste.
As per the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, all entities involved in manufacturing, refurbishing, and recycling must register on a portal developed by the CPCB to manage e-waste sustainably. The rules enhance the enforcement mechanism through regular audits and inspections, aiming to integrate the informal sector into formal channels for better recycling practices.
