Member of Legislative Council Bilkis Bano has said that the opportunities for women in politics need to increase, as women are capable of handling all responsibilities.

Ms. Bilkis Bano, speaking after inaugurating the International Women’s Day programme in Shivamogga on Sunday, said that because of education, women had acquired the skills and capacity to manage responsibilities and finish tasks assigned to them. Earlier, women were restricted to home, and the fields to explore were also limited for them. However, in recent years, they have entered all fields, and they have succeeded in bringing significant changes,” she said.

Further, she opined that if women were given more opportunities in politics, they would empower other women and also ensure the state prospers. “For the progress of the country, women must progress. Education and family support are essential for the women’s progress,” she added.

G. Pallavi, chairperson of Karnataka SC-ST Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities Development Corporation, said that woman continued to face restrictions, though she excelled in all fields. Basavanna, the social reformer of the 12th century, gave equal opportunities to women on par with men in Anubhava Mantapa. Similarly, the architect of the Indian constitution, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, gave equal rights to women. “We should not forget Savithribai Phule, who ensured education for women, despite all difficulties,” she said.

Shivamogga Urban Development Authority chairperson H.S. Sundaresh, Prof. Kiran R. Desai, District Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority chairperson C.S. Chandrabhupal and others were present.
