Professional dancer Amy Dowden was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer back in 2023.
Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden has confessed that she fears she may not be able to be a mum following her recovery from stage three breast cancer. After undergoing a range of treatments, including chemotherapy, a mastectomy and hormone therapy, the star was told that there was “no evidence of the disease” left.
However during her tough battle, Amy was forced into an early hormone-induced menopause at the start of her chemotherapy. At the time, Amy and her husband Ben Jones, who she married in 2022, were able to freeze five embryos in the hope of being able to start a family later down the line when she had recovered.
In a recent interview however, Amy shared that it is not certain if she will ever be able to safely carry a baby by herself, reports the Mirror. She said: “Obviously, there is a big, dark cloud over me. Will I become a mother? I’ve wanted to be a mummy since I was a little girl.”
The 35-year-old added: “I was one of those girls who would always have a little baby Annabelle. And I have two gorgeous nephews, who I love to pieces. But we will cross that bridge when it comes to it and I will explore every option going.”
Amy was first diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 after she found a lump in her breast just before she jetted off on her honeymoon to the Maldives. Despite getting the all clear in March 2024, Amy underwent another mastectomy in November 2025 as a preventative measure.
In an interview last year, Amy shared that she couldn’t think about having children at the time due to her hormone-fed cancer. She explained: “I had a hormone-fed cancer, so they needed to put me into menopause because my hormones were feeding the cancer. My whole body was feeding cancer.
“But also because I was having chemotherapy, and as amazing as chemotherapy is, it destroys a lot of cells in your body. Your eggs, your ovaries, everything can be damaged and not necessarily reboot again.”
She added: “You produce so many hormones when you’re pregnant, I’d be at such a high risk of my cancer returning. Of course we want children, but we still don’t know.
“There are so many options, which we’re grateful for. With fertility and the pressure in general you don’t know what someone is going through. People should bear that in mind. We need to educate.”
Amy first joined BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing back in 2017 after sharing a love for dance throughout her childhood. After persuading her twin sister Rebecca to join her in a disco dancing competition, even though neither of them had danced before, Amy’s goal of being a professional dancer began when they won first place.
Following her diagnosis, Amy made her return to the Strictly ballroom with partner JB Gill in 2024. However she was forced to pull out after suffering from a foot injury.
The Welsh dancer admitted that in her darkest moments while battling cancer she feared it would bring the end to her beloved career. However, after finding the strength to keep pushing on, Amy returned to the dance show once again in 2025.
She explained: “After what happened in 2023 and 2024, I realised I wasn’t ready or well enough to be on the show. I either had to hang up my dance shoes or dig deep. So I worked hard to get my body back to where it was before.
“After I finished chemo, I struggled to even walk up the stairs. When you’ve had something taken away from you, you appreciate it even more. It gave me the confidence I needed and last year, I realised Amy’s back. Cancer wasn’t going to take dancing away from me.”
