Breaking Update: Here’s a clear explanation of the latest developments related to Breaking News:ISGE: Reproductive Steroids and Affective Disorders– What Just Happened and why it matters right now.
RESEARCHERS in the USA have expanded understanding of the pathophysiology behind reproductive mood disorders, according to a research abstract presented at the 2026 Annual Congress of the International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology.
Affective Disorders
Affective disorders are a leading source of disease burden worldwide and significant causes of morbidity and mortality, with the ability to shorten a lifespan by more than a decade.
They account for more than 200 billion USD annually in direct and indirect costs in the USA.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome that occurs during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
Symptoms can include depression, anxiety, concentration problems, and fatigue.
There are currently very few diagnostic tests for PMDD.
Perimenopausal Depression
Perimenopausal depression is a type of mood disorder occurring in the period leading up to menopause.
Women who experience perimenopausal depression have often had depression in the past, but not always.
Treatments range from antidepressants to cognitive behavioural therapy.
Hormone Manipulation Protocols
Researchers studied two groups of women with diagnoses of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and women with past perimenopausal depression.
A reproductive- and age-matched asymptomatic group was included in the study as a control.
Blood samples were collected from all women, from which researchers developed lymphoblastoid cell lines (lab-grown immune cells).
Hormone levels were manipulated in vivo and in vitro.
Researchers analysed hormone measures, behavioural ratings, and gene expression.
Implications for Treating Reproductive Mood Disorders
Historically, reproductive mood disorders have been considered to be hormone excess or deficiency states that require treatment to correct hormonal imbalances.
The presented study expands the understanding of the pathophysiology of and treatments for reproductive mood disorders, scientists reported.
