Britney Spears was arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence after authorities reported that she was driving erratically.
According to American media reports and the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the 44-year-old singer was stopped on Wednesday night after authorities received a report about a black BMW 430i driving erratically at a high rate of speed on the US-101 freeway.
Police officers pulled the vehicle over, and Spears, who was alone in the car, was identified as the driver. They said she showed signs of impairment and was asked to complete a series of field sobriety tests at the scene.
She was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
Following the arrest, Spears was reportedly taken to a nearby medical facility where a blood sample was taken to determine her blood alcohol level, which is standard procedure in DUI cases in California.
Officials confirmed that she was not injured during the incident.
Spears was later booked at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office at around 3am and released a few hours later, shortly after 6am, through a cite-and-release process. Her car was impounded, and the incident remains under investigation. The results of the chemical tests are still pending.
A representative for the singer addressed the situation in a statement, calling the arrest “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable”.
The statement added that Spears intends to cooperate with authorities and take responsibility moving forward.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative said.
Spears is expected to appear at Ventura County Superior Court on May 4. Sources close to the singer told US media outlets that she was emotional following the arrest and appeared regretful about the situation.
The incident has once again drawn public attention to the singer, who had previously stepped back from the music industry in recent years.
Spears rose to global fame in the late 1990s with hits such as “…Baby One More Time”, “Toxic”, “Womanizer” and “Stronger”, becoming one of the most successful pop artists of her generation.
Her personal life has often been under intense public scrutiny. After going through a difficult period in 2007, Spears was placed under a conservatorship that gave her father control over her finances and many aspects of her personal life.
The conservatorship lasted for 13 years before it was terminated in 2021 following a widely supported #FreeBritney movement.
She released her memoir “The Woman in Me” in 2023 and has previously said she does not plan to return to the music industry full-time. She recently also sold her iconic music catalogue.
Since then, Spears has tried to stay out of the spotlight. She focused on posting videos of herself dancing on her Instagram account, which has since been deleted.
