Colin Gray, the father of an alleged school shooter in Georgia, has just been found guilty of murder, marking a truly significant moment as this is the first time a parent has faced murder charges in connection with their child’s school shooting. This landmark verdict is a huge win for prosecutors who have been pushing to hold parents accountable in these devastating situations.

According to The Washington Post, a Barrow County jury delivered the guilty verdict against Gray, 55, after less than a day of deliberation following an emotional two-week trial. He was convicted on a staggering 29 counts, which include two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of involuntary manslaughter. This means he could be looking at a maximum sentence of 180 years in prison.

This tragic situation stems from a 2024 incident at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. Gray’s son, Colt Gray, who was only 14 at the time, is accused of opening fire in the school with an AR-style rifle. The attack tragically resulted in the deaths of two teachers and two students, and left nine other individuals injured. Colt Gray is currently awaiting trial and faces four counts of felony murder, among other charges.

A rifle might not be the best Christmas gift for a minor 

During the trial, Colin Gray took the stand, testifying through tears that he had given his son Colt the rifle as a Christmas gift in 2023. He maintained that he saw no warning signs that his son would use the weapon in a mass shooting. 

However, prosecutors painted a different picture, arguing that Gray should be held responsible for his actions. They contended that he failed to properly secure the weapon and, even more critically, ignored warning signs and clear red flags regarding his son’s deteriorating mental health.
