South African television has lost one of its most vibrant personalities.
Ian von Memerty, known for his energy, humour, and fearless creativity on screen, has died at the age of 61.
Von Memerty was never shy about tackling big, uncomfortable conversations. Through his series “Dying for a Better Life”, shared on Facebook and YouTube, he encouraged people to think about how and when their lives should end, a message that sparked reflection and debate online.
Tributes have been pouring in from colleagues and fans.
Musician and TV personality Zwai Bala took to X, writing: “Shocked by Ian Von Memerty’s passing. Saw his talent in ‘A Handful of Keys’ 20 years ago and worked with him on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ 10 years later. Many laughs on set. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Ian. We salute you.”
Charl van Heyningen, a close friend, shared an emotional tribute, revealing the private side of Von Memerty’s final hours: “My friend Ian von Memerty is dead. Fear of a future of poverty and physical decline led him to take his own life at the age of 61. Apart from his family, the four of us were the chosen ones who spent his final hours with him before he left us in the early hours of 23 February in a hotel room in Johannesburg.
“There is so much I could and want to say, but I will suffice to simply say rest softly, my friend. Our bond was strong. The laughter was endless. You were a mentor, an advisor, a close friend. And that damn talent of yours. And that mind. I miss you. I wish you had the help I could have offered.”
Claudia Benade took to Facebook to write: “I am horrified…..there is an announcement on Facebook that Ian Von Memerty died on Feb 23, aged 61……and it seems he chose euthanasia, despite not having a fatal illness. I had seen some of his postings about this ‘option’ and thought he was talking about his dad, not his own demise.
“Why would a man with his talent want to die at 61? On the posting, the family have asked that all respect their privacy and not comment on his demise. I am just so shocked by it all, I had to share the announcement.”
Gary Alfonso MediaGuy wrote: “I was so shocked and sad to hear that Ian von Memerty, a well-known actor and someone I once met as a positive influencer of the world of arts, died in a hotel room in Johannesburg this weekend.”
“I don’t know the circumstances, but he was overwhelmingly in favour of what he called “self-deliverance” and over the past 3 months recorded a series of presentations on YouTube called ‘Dying for a Better Life’. It’s so scary. But real. And true. For so many of us. 13 episodes. Rest in Peace Ian von Memerty. You played your part and we will miss you.”
While Kerry Hiles said: “Ian von Memerty I have never met a director with greater ability to see every single part of a production in any given moment of said production: the dance-steps, the blocking, the costume changes, the LX cue, the sheet music bar, the script, the audience expectation, where the people offstage should be right then.
“You lived and worked all of the parts upside down and inside out, knowing how to stick them together in amazing ways, acknowledging that each cog – no matter how small – was vital to the smooth running of the machine. You taught me so much. I’m sorry you felt you had run out of life to share.”
Von Memerty’s death is a reminder of the pressures faced by public figures and the importance of mental health.
He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, creativity and thought-provoking honesty qualities that made him a beloved figure both on and off the screen.
