What is a GPU?
It stands for Graphics Processing Unit, a specialised electronic circuit designed for parallel processing, unlike a central processing unit (CPU) found in computers. The expanded computing capacity makes GPUs ideal for 3D rendering, video editing, gaming, and training AI models.
How many GPUs does India have?
As part of the 23-month-old state-funded AI Mission, the government of India has accumulated over 38,000 GPUs, which it rents to data centres at a subsidised rate, sometimes as low as ₹65 per hour.
Earlier this month, Vaishnaw announced his intent to add 20,000 more GPUs in a few weeks. The computing capacity would have to increase over fourfold to reach the goal of 200,000, which he revealed today.
