Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court as questions persist over an additional charge linked to the missing firearm in the Hyde Park shooting case.

His lawyer, Jason Saus, told SABC News: “I do confirm that my client is in high spirits, we visited him several times this weekend. We are still taking further instructions and at this point we do not have any further comment.

“We do not have a choice, we have to do what we need to do. We do not want to compromise the investigations,” he said.

Saus indicated that the defence has not been formally notified of a defeating the ends of justice charge, which is understood to relate to the firearm allegedly used in the shooting that has not yet been recovered.

Police have not publicly clarified whether the additional charge will be formally added when the matter is called in court.

Chatunga, 28, and his co-accused are expected to face an attempted murder charge following the shooting of a 23-year-old employee at a Hyde Park residence last week.

As previously reported by IOL, Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that a cartridge was recovered at the scene, but the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting has not yet been located.

The missing firearm remains central to the investigation as Mugabe prepares to appear before the court.
