Meanwhile, Akul Gupta and Vidit Jain, founders of Toyo Kombucha, take a blunt view of the category’s origin. The real catalyst, they argue, was the need to replace sugar-heavy beverages that quietly harmed long-term health. They say, “Functional drinks are less about trend ingredients and more about giving people something better to reach for.”

As the Toyo founders explain, “Consumers don’t necessarily reach for kombucha to fix their microbiome; they choose it because it tastes good and feels lighter.” The benefit becomes embedded in the experience rather than imposed as an obligation.

Singhal emphasises, “Functional must mean something tangible, not buzzwords.” Ingredient integrity and honest claims build trust, especially in markets like India, where urban lifestyles are increasingly linked to metabolic and gut-related concerns.

For Hajela, this signals a larger healthcare shift: moving from reactive treatment to proactive maintenance. Small, daily nutritional choices compound into meaningful public health gains.
