Whilst Prince William and Kate Middleton have enjoyed nearly 15 years of marital bliss, their journey wasn’t always without turbulence.
Indeed, in 2007, William and Kate experienced a rough period in their relationship, resulting in an official breakup for several months before they ultimately reconciled.
The young duo faced challenges in their relationship when, in March 2007, they were spotted wearing matching tweed at the Cheltenham horse racing festival, appearing less than enamored with each other.
The romance was reportedly “soured beyond repair,” and William, 43, exacerbated matters when he seemed to disregard his girlfriend of four years as he was photographed with an 18-year-old Brazilian student he encountered on the dance floor of Elements nightclub in Bournemouth.
The fallout from the event led to the future princess, Kate, 44, issuing an ultimatum to William, which has now been revealed in a new book chronicling the story of the couple, serialized in the Mirror.
William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story sees royal editor Russell Myers offering his perspective on their relationship, enriched by exclusive access to numerous palace insiders, providing previously untold context. In the book, Russell describes how Kate was dissatisfied with the state of the romance, leading her to demand a change from William, reports the Mirror US.
Russell penned, “A long-standing friend who she confided in at the time said, ‘Catherine was distressed. She was miserable, but she certainly wasn’t desperate. She felt as though she had nothing to lose and for the first time she probably relayed her true feelings to William. She wasn’t demanding an engagement, but she wanted a commitment, and if he couldn’t deliver that, well, then she left him in no doubt that it was best they go their separate ways.'”
However, when faced with this ultimatum, William felt obligated to officially end the relationship, expressing his sentiments on the matter in just five words.
Russell elaborated further on the situation writing, “In a shock move, William personally instructed Clarence House to confirm the news that he and Catherine were no longer together. But, behind the scenes, there was much going on that suggested this was more than just a difference of opinion. It’s telling that William confided to one senior courtier that, ‘at least she is free.'”
Russell concluded, “This was perhaps the most significant moment in his life since his mother had passed. William revealed a deep distress and anxiety over what a relationship with him represented in the real world. The attention, the constant pressure and expectation. He held these things responsible for contributing to the breakdown of his previous relationships, but now, when it mattered the most, he wondered if he was taking the right course of action, for Catherine or himself.”
