Under the motto “Well-being for all, happiness for all”, government and company representatives as well as experts from all over the world are discussing the real impact of artificial intelligence in New Delhi. “AI today is transforming diverse sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, governance and business,” wrote India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi at X at the start of the five-day AI Impact Summit conference.
Modi expressed the hope that the summit could enrich the global discourse on the various aspects of AI. In addition to innovation and collaboration, he also included responsible use of the technology.
The conference will be attended by 20 heads of state and government or their deputies, including French President Emmanuel Macron and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) has been announced from Germany. Top representatives from the industry will also be attending, such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (ChatGPT) and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai (Google).
Responsible use
According to the Indian government, the aim is to promote an impact-oriented and human-centered approach to AI. Accordingly, it is not intended to be a pure technology summit, but rather a platform for dialog on how AI can be used responsibly and practically, among other things.
With the summit, India is following on from similar events in the UK, South Korea and France in recent years. This is the first time such a meeting has been held in the Global South, it was said. The host country also wants to position itself as an important player in the field of AI. A year ago, at the end of an AI action summit in Paris, around 60 countries called for transparent and sustainable use of the technology with internationally applicable regulations.
