Daniel Radcliffe says life as a new father has left him overwhelmed in the best way as he juggles Broadway.

The 36-year-old actor spoke during a break from rehearsals for Every Brilliant Thing, a one man show that begins previews Febuary 21 in Manhattan.

The play follows a character who builds a list of reasons to live in an effort to reach his suicidal mother and relies heavily on audience participation.

“It’s the third day of rehearsals,” Radcliffe told Rolling Stone. “I’m literally the only person in this play. They can’t start without me.”

The Harry Potter star explained that he shares direct exchanges with the theater audience, a setup he called “very much outside of my comfort zone.”

“Not really knowing what’s going to happen,” he said, “that’s always a very enticing prospect for me.”

In the play, the mother struggles with sucidical depression, and one method that helped her through her mental health was her child writing her a growing, lifelong catalog of everything that is worth living for. When asked what would go on his own list in Every Brilliant Thing, Radcliffe went straight to his young son, whom he shares with his wife Erin Drake.

“Most of mine at the moment would probably be about my son, all the bizarre pronunciations he has for things,” Radcliffe said.

He described taking him to the Monster Jam live monster truck show and watching him latch onto one vehicle in particular.

“I took him to [the live monster-truck show] Monster Jam, and there’s a truck that’s a unicorn, and it shoots confetti out of its horn. The truck is called Sparkle Smash, if you’re interested,” he said. “I heard him telling that story later, and he referred to the confetti as ‘spaghetti.’ Also, his godfather gave him a little toy-car model of a Lamborghini, which he has remembered as ‘zucchini.’ So there’s any number of just incredibly sweet things that he says.”

Radcliffe added that his list would also include music.

“I’d also say the music of Joanna Newsom or Tom Lehrer,” he said. “I could do a list of a thousand brilliant things that were just records. And there’s one in the show that I love, which is ‘Waking up late with someone you love.’ That is a brilliant thing in life.”

Radcliffe is also the face of the NBC sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, in which he plays a filmmaker trying to revive the image of a disgraced football star, played by Tracy Morgan.

“I’m naturally pessimistic about a lot of things, so I never want to lean too much into unbridled optimism,” he said. “But it would be awesome if this show can go for a few years. It would make me very happy.”

Working with Morgan has given him a crash course in loose, unpredictable comedy on set.

“Tracy, he’s one of the funniest people on the planet,” Radcliffe said. “Every day, you’re going to hear him say five of the craziest things you’ve ever heard a human being say. And also he’s incredibly generous and capable of having very emotional conversations as well. So he’s a real pleasure to work with. We’re very different, but the thing we overlap on is that we both really, really love our job and feel very lucky to be able to do it.”

He added that he plans to attend his first basketball game with Morgan at Madison Square Garden.

“I’m going to a Knicks game with him. I’ve never been to a basketball game, and I’m also aware that Tracy’s, like, the mayor of MSG,” Radcliffe said. “It’s going to be an interesting experience.”
