Shillong MP Ricky A J Syngkon has called for an immediate halt to the environmental clearance process for a proposed cement plant in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district. He cited concerns over procedural irregularities and potential environmental risks.
In a letter to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Syngkon argued that the project, proposed by Shree Cement Limited, should not proceed without a comprehensive review. Encompassing an expansive list of facilities, including a clinker unit and power plant, the project raises issues related to cumulative regional environmental impacts.
Highlighting alleged deficiencies in the public consultation process, Syngkon urged for intensified scrutiny due to tribal land rights and potential constitutional challenges. He emphasized the need for a thorough independent review before any further action is taken, underscoring environmental protection as an integral part of the right to life under the Indian Constitution.
