Comedian Celeste Barber’s husband has revealed the couple’s separation after 22 years together.

Api Robin, 52, known as Barber’s “hot husband” in her comedy skits, shared the sad news on Instagram late Friday.

However Barber, 43, has not made a public statement.

“The past few months have been incredibly challenging and deeply heartbreaking for us both,” Robin started.

“After much reflection, the decision has been made to separate.

“There is still love and respect between us, but sadly we are at capacity and have come to recognise we may want for different things.

“Our priority remains our children and their wellbeing.”

Robin changed his Instagram description to “formerly hot husband” with startled face and laughing emojis.

Barber’s husband, an arborist and home dad, has been a fixture in Barber’s hilarious viral videos that parody the world of modelling and which shot her to fame.

To the world, the couple seemed tight and deeply in love. Robin often posted photos of himself supporting Barber at gigs around the world.

They share two children, Lou and Buddy, and Robin has two older daughters from a previous relationship.

Barber’s career took off due to the popularity of her videos imitating models and influencers, which lead to acting roles, a worldwide comedy tour and 10 million followers on Instagram.

Her Backup Dancer tour will see Barber on the road in Europe and the UK this year after already touring the US, Canada and Australia.

She earned the lead in the Netflix series Wellmania and starred in Runt released in 2024.

Barber and Robin met 22 years ago at a Sydney pub where Celeste was working as a bartender.

She was 21 and Robin was 30 and had two daughters, Sahra and Kyah, then aged two and four.

“I was a young 30,” Robin told Women’s Weekly in November 2024. “So I just think we were fairly similar in age [despite the gap].”

Api was living on the mid-North Coast and the couple started a long-distance relationship, and Celeste stepped into being a stepmother to the girls.

Barber told Women’s Weekly the step-parenting role was “super hard”.

“I love those girls so much. They’re in their 20s now and they say to me, ‘I don’t know how you did that’.”

In their early years together, Barber worked multiple jobs while trying to get her acting career off the ground.

She studied at the University of Western Sydney’s Theatre Nepean, while Api was working as an arborist.

“We had a conversation really early on about our hopes and dreams and how we see ourselves,” Barber told the magazine.

“I said, ‘I really want to work in this industry. It’s my dream. And I’m going to actively work toward that’.

“And Api was like, ‘Well, I really want us to have a family, and I would love to raise our children and support you in that’.

“And we decided, let’s have this big life together. People are often like, ‘You’re so lucky to have Api’ – which, obviously, I am – but [they mean] ‘a man that’s happy to stay home while you go and do everything.’

Robin added: “And I get pats on the back for doing all the things the other women do. I see it. I get it. But that’s inequality.”

In 2019, as Barber’s career began taking off, the family considered relating to the US but then COVId happened and they realised they didn’t want to raise their kids in America.

Barber said the couple’s relationship worked because “we’re just desperately in love with each other. Sometimes to a fault”.

‘“We just love each other, so we will make it work. It’s super lucky, especially now, getting the success that we’ve got. There’s no way it would be this great if I was doing it on my own. I’ve no interest in that at all.”
