Atsuko Okatsuka has a unique hypothetical for new lovebirds who want to test their longevity as a couple.
“Imagine them going swimming,” the comedian, 37, tells PEOPLE of her thought experiment. “That’ll be good because if she was always looking for someone who has her back and she felt like that never happened, putting herself in a dangerous situation, like swimming, can really test chemistry — having a common enemy.”
The hypothetical is something Okatsuka will be able to test as a celebrity matchmaker for the Singapore Tourism Board’s new initiative Aunties, Not Algorithms. The campaign encourages singles to put down their dating apps and instead submit their profiles for “auntie-led matchmaking.”

While the stand-up comedian may run each profile through her swimming hypothetical, she’s confident her fellow aunties will keep her grounded.
“I can get really creative with things,” Okatsuka says. “I feel like Kheng Hua and Aliza’s jobs will be to call me back and be like, ‘Okay, that’s too crazy. Let’s not see if they drown.’”

Okatsuka says now it is more important than ever to trust an auntie’s opinion when it comes to dating. In the past, when the comedian was single, she often went with her “gut instinct” and sometimes “purposefully didn’t listen” to the auntie figures in her life. Without it, she’s gotten herself into some pretty interesting dating scenarios.
“One time I was at a grocery store and this guy bought a raw squid for me,” she says. After being initially “flattered” by the purchase, Okatsuka agreed to the date.
“He was super immature and he was like, ‘Do you like my house, three stories?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I do like your house.’ And then I started seeing photos of him as a kid everywhere. There’s a lot of family photos about. Then I found out it was actually his mom’s place.”
She adds: “He’s like, ‘Hurry, we have to hurry with this date because she’s going to come home soon.’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, can you even afford that squid you bought me?’ ”
That’s why Okatsuka says it’s important to lean on the “matriarchal support system” of aunties.
“They have great instincts, they know how to show up for each other, they communicate, unlike men. They got your back,” she says. “It’s truly a community mindset.”
