February is a month heavy with meaning. It’s Black History Month—a time of reflection and reckoning—but it’s also when the optimism of New Year’s resolutions either begins to solidify or quietly slips away. By now, many have already abandoned their goals (Quitter’s Day, after all, lands in early January), but this year, I approached things differently.

Instead of grand declarations, I chose to be intentional.

As I near 30, I’ve been thinking deeply about what it actually means to be well—not performatively healthy, not merely checking boxes at annual physicals, but committed to a life with less stress, more ease, and greater longevity. For Black women in particular, stress isn’t just a feeling—it’s a public health crisis. Chronic stress is linked to everything from cardiovascular disease to autoimmune disorders, and as science continues to affirm, the body keeps the score.

So when our beauty editors asked what wellness trends we were experimenting with in 2026, my list was less about aesthetics and more about sustainability: biohacking, therapy in its many forms, mobility, rest, and systems that support the nervous system—not just soothe it temporarily.

That’s what led me to red light therapy.

Often referred to as photobiomodulation, red light therapy has become a buzzy staple across wellness TikTok and Instagram—but beneath the hype is real science. Consistent use has been shown to support collagen production, reduce inflammation, minimize fine lines and discoloration, encourage hair regrowth, calm acne, improve cognitive function, and even ease chronic pain. In short, it’s one of the few wellness trends that feels less like snake oil and more like a modern miracle.

Still, most red light devices require another step—another mask to charge, another panel to stand in front of, another ritual to remember. Enter: HigherDOSE’s Red Light Therapy Showerhead Filter.

Why I’m Rethinking Wellness At 30—And Starting In The Shower
HigherDOSE’s red light therapy showerhead combines dual red and near-infrared light with a 10-stage filtration system for a spa-like, at-home wellness experience.

The wellness brand—known for its infrared saunas, PEMF mats, and at-home biohacking tools—has managed to fold red light therapy into one of the most unavoidable parts of our day: showering.

According to HigherDOSE, the showerhead combines dual red and near-infrared light with a 10-stage water filtration system designed to remove chlorine, heavy metals, and other impurities. The promise? Cleaner water, healthier skin and scalp, and a daily wellness ritual that doesn’t require extra time—or effort.

After just a few uses, I’m comfortable giving it five stars.

The first thing you notice isn’t even the glow—it’s the feeling. The water feels noticeably softer on the skin, and there’s an immediate sense of calm that settles in, almost like your nervous system recognizes it’s safe to exhale. The red light casts a subtle, spa-like warmth across the shower, turning what’s usually a rushed necessity into something meditative.

This is where the product really shines. It’s not just about biohacking or beauty benefits (though those are real); it’s about integration. Instead of adding another wellness task to an already full plate, the HigherDOSE showerhead enhances a routine you’re already committed to. Over time, that ease matters.

For Black women—whose skin and hair are especially impacted by hard water, inflammation, and stress—the filtration alone is a win. But paired with red light therapy, the shower becomes a space for restoration, not just cleansing.

Wellness doesn’t have to be extreme to be effective. Sometimes, it looks like making your everyday rituals work harder for you.

And sometimes, it looks like standing under warm water, bathed in red light, finally letting your shoulders drop and your jaw unclench.
