Seoul: Samsung Electronics is set to begin mass production of HBM4 chips, the world’s first sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory, later this month, industry sources said on Sunday.

The South Korean technology giant is expected to start shipping the advanced memory chips as early as next week, following the Lunar New Year holiday, for use in graphics processing units (GPUs) manufactured by Nvidia Corp. Nvidia’s GPUs are widely deployed in generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, according to Yonhap News Agency.

“Samsung, which has the world’s largest production capacity and the broadest product portfolio, has demonstrated a recovery in its technological competitiveness by becoming the first to mass-produce the highest-performing HBM4,” an industry source said.

The global HBM market is currently led by fifth-generation HBM3E chips, but analysts expect HBM4 to emerge as the next key technology. Nvidia plans to integrate HBM4 into its next-generation AI accelerator, codenamed Vera Rubin.

Sources said Samsung has successfully passed Nvidia’s quality certification process and secured purchase orders, with production schedules aligned to Nvidia’s upcoming product launch. The volume of HBM4 samples supplied for customer-side module testing has also increased significantly under the latest contracts.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics reported a record-breaking operating profit in the fourth quarter, reaching 20 trillion won (US$13.8 billion) for the first time, driven by a supercycle in the semiconductor industry.

The fourth-quarter operating profit marked a rise of more than 200 per cent year-on-year, the company said in a preliminary earnings report. If confirmed, it would be the first time Samsung’s quarterly earnings have crossed the 20 trillion-won mark.

Sales rose 22.7 per cent to 93 trillion won, also a first for the company. Net profit figures were not disclosed. The operating profit was 1.8 per cent higher than market estimates, according to Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency.
