Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos’ surreal Squarespace Super Bowl ad has baffled NFL fans, slamming it as “pretentious” and “trying too hard

NFL fans blasted Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos as the “most pretentious pair ever” after their Super Bowl commercial for Squarespace aired, igniting a wave of backlash across social media.

The ad, which comes on the heels of Ben Stiller’s controversial commercial, is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, marked the latest collaboration between the Oscar-winning duo, known for films such as The Favourite and Poor Things.

Within minutes of the spot dropping, viewers took to X to mock the pairing. “Emma Stone and Yorgos? that’s gotta be a wild ad,” wrote one user. Another added, “Emma Stone + Yorgos = art house meets website builder. Buckle up.”

“Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos teaming up for a Squarespace ad is the most pretentious Super Bowl commercial pairing ever. Gonna be artsy and weird for no reason, calling it now,” one post read.

Others questioned the credibility of celebrity appearances during the Super Bowl ads.

“Honestly, great acting of course Emma sounds amazing but I would like this more if the celebrities actually use the f–king brands that they’re representing and making millions of dollars for you know damn well Emma Stone does not use Square Space,” another user wrote.

“Sabrina Carpenter’s commercial is much better,” one viewer commented. “Ok, I’m honestly so tired of this pairing. Girl go work with someone else pleaseeeeeeeeeee!” one post read. Another critic was harsher, calling the duo a “pathetic sellout duo” and accusing them of “sacrificing artistic integrity for corporate money.”

A handful of users praised Stone’s performance.

“Nice!!! She ate,” one fan posted. While another added, “Awesome. We’re about to witness greatness.”

Stone, who won her second Academy Award for her role in Lanthimos’s Poor Things, called the ad “a joy” to shoot in an interview with Elle.

“To be honest, I think Yorgos’s work has always mined these social interactions and rules,” Stone said in an interview promoting the spot. “These are the kinds of stories I’m personally interested in as an audience member.”

Squarespace, said the commercial is “a unique collaboration that brings storytelling and web design together in a new way.”

Stone said the project aligned with her minimalist digital preferences.

“I just got a computer for the first time in 10 years,” she said. “I’ve been doing everything on my phone. So I appreciate sites that actually work on mobile, and Squarespace nails that.”
