GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis stopped by the Local Five studio Thursday morning to discuss mental health and wellness additions to the department, as well as the changes made to the background process for quicker hiring.

Almost a year ago, the Green Bay Police Department brought on a mental health and wellness psychiatric nurse to its staff, something Chief Davis says is “going really well.”
It’s been very well received inside the department. The person that we hired has done a great job not only in critical incident response, helping officers and our staff through some of the things they unfortunately have to deal with in their career and police work, but we’ve also done mandatory check-ins for everyone in the department and that was very well received. We didn’t have to twist anybody’s arm to go do that.

In addition to the mental health and wellness psychiatric nurse, the Green Bay Police Department also brought on board a therapy dog named Queso.
Chief Davis says the department has had Queso for about 6 to 8 months and spends most of his time sitting in on some of the mentioned check-ins with department employees.
He adds that both queso and the mental health and wellness psychiatric nurse, as well as a required ‘wellness hour,’ play an important role in chipping away at the stigma about police getting help while also sending a message to the employees that their safety and mental wellbeing is taken seriously.

Chief Davis also spoke on the changes to the background process for the hiring and onboarding of new officers. He states the process of going through applicants is now much faster thanks to these changes.
