Mr. Wonderful suggested that the last thing celebrities should do is lecture fans — unless their goal is losing business.
“Half the people in politics that you piss off won’t buy your music anymore,” O’Leary declared. “Don’t be stupid about it, but hey, they don’t listen.”
Host John Roberts then brought up Ricky Gervais’ thoughts on fellow stars weighing in on politics, first from his Golden Globes monologue in 2020, when he urged Hollywood stars to keep quiet about current affairs, then his thoughts again after this year’s Grammys ceremony.
“They’re still not listening,” wrote on X, included a laughing-crying emoji.
“Well, I know that her agents are going out of their minds,” O’Leary said before agreeing with Gervais’ previous comments.
“It’s the first lesson 101 for celebrity, as you rise up, whether you’re a film star, music star, whatever, shut your mouth and just entertain.”

O’Leary’s (and Gervais’) remarks come after Eilish declared “no one is illegal on stolen land” during her acceptance speech on Sunday night, then added “F*** ICE” before leaving the stage.
The Tongva tribe in Southern California, the Indigenous inhabitants who actually own the “ancestral land” Eilish’s multi-million-dollar mansion sits on, previously issued a statement about the singer’s choice words.
“Eilish has not contacted our tribe directly regarding her property. We do value the instance when Public Figures provide visibility to the true history of this country.”
The Tongva spokesperson added: “We have reached out to her team to express our appreciation for her comments. It is our hope that in future discussions, the tribe can explicitly be referenced to ensure the public understands that the greater Los Angeles basin remains Gabrieleno Tongva territory.”
O’Leary suggested that celebrities do their research before opening their mouths when it comes to anything political or historical.
“I feel sorry for celebrities that wander into this kind of thing without doing at least the basic AI search,” the Ottawa-born co-founder of Vice said.
“[Eilish] got torched. But you know, do your homework first.”
