Health Update: Health Update: A focus on wellness and wellbeing: How Eden redefines the modern workplace – What Experts Say– What Experts Say.
Not only is Eden a beacon of sustainability, but it is also a leader in workplace wellbeing.
From the outset, it was designed with the occupant in mind, with each aspect meticulously crafted to meet WELL Building Standard principles – an evidence-based, performance-driven system that focuses on 10 core aspects: air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind, and community. The aim is to ensure that everyone’s physical and mental health is supported, helping people to thrive and contributing to long-term business success.
In a recent study, *47% of employers reported an increase in productivity when employees’ health and wellbeing is supported. This indicates that the needs of the modern workforce have changed dramatically in recent years, with the health and wellbeing of employees now a greater priority than ever thanks to the proven benefits – such as talent retention and productivity – that a focus on wellness can bring. Eden is designed to meet these needs.
Thoughtfully designed both inside and out
Eden features fresh air rates (2 litres per second/m2 more than industry best standards) and CO2 sensors to monitor and provide optimal air quality throughout the building. Fresh, clean air improves comfort and supports higher cognitive function, enhancing our ability to reason, retain information, and maintain focus.
Research shows that productivity gains of **8–11% can be attributed to better air quality; factors that are essential for maximising productivity and supporting a successful working day.
The building also has a 60:40 solid-to-glazing window ratio, offering an ideal balance between daylight and thermal performance. This design increases the flow of natural light while controlling heat loss and gain, helping to maintain a pleasant temperature all year round.
With Eden’s exterior adorned by Europe’s largest living wall – featuring 350,000 plants – the large windows also provide a direct connection to nature. Lush greenery overhangs the façade, creating a sense of tranquillity unmatched by any other office building in Manchester.
The plants that envelop the façade help reduce air pollution too, delivering a 2,000% biodiversity gain in the local area and creating habitats for birds and bees.
These features combine to create a calming atmosphere and conditions that allow people to do their best work.
Good for the mind and body
Guided by the WELL Building Standard principles, Eden’s design promotes workforce wellbeing by supporting physical, mental, and social health.
Each of these elements focus on different aspects that, when combined, create a workplace that supports a healthier work-life balance. Our yoga studio and quiet contemplation space on the mezzanine provide places to unwind, alongside the onsite café, Spice & Grind, which serves fresh food and artisan coffee. The roof terrace also offers a fresh perspective with panoramic city views, providing a unique place to step away from the desk and catch up with friends or colleagues away from the traditional office environment.
Elsewhere, Eden offers a curated calendar of events for occupants, including arts and crafts, charity fundraisers, seasonal gatherings, and more – all designed to help occupants connect with one another and support their personal and professional growth.
In addition to the multiple areas created to foster collaboration and connectivity, Eden includes facilities designed to enhance physical wellness, such as storage for 156 bikes along with showers and both drying and changing rooms. Cycling to work or going for a lunchtime run can be easily integrated into the working day, while also promoting a more sustainable way to travel to work.
