ICE opposition

To describe the political climate in the US at the moment as tense would be an understatement. The death of Renée Good and Alex Pretti has led to criticism of US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. And on Sunday night, musicians from Justin Bieber to Joni Mitchell wore anti-ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) pins. While collecting her award for Best Song, Billie Eilish said “No one is illegal on stolen land”. Bad Bunny, who will soon perform at the Super Bowl, took home three awards. On stage, he gave an impassioned speech telling those in the audience; “Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say ICE out. We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we’re humans and we are Americans … The only thing more powerful than hate is love so please we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love.”

Cher’s on stage confusion

After encouraging people to follow their dreams while accepting her lifetime achievement award, music legend Cher went to exit the stage to rapturous applause. However, host Trevor Noah called her back reminding her she still had to present the Record of the Year. Cher returned to the podium and stated that ‘the award goes to…’ before looking off stage bemused. “They told me it was going to be on the prompter,” she said, opening the envelope. “Oh and the Grammy goes to Luther Vandross,” she smiled before clarifying “No, Kendrick Lamar”. Singer Vandross died more than 20 years ago, but, to be fair to Cher, the song Luther is named after him so in a way she was right. Sort of.

The naked dress

The naked dress has been a red carpet staple for decades. In the past, Josephine Baker, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Birkin, Rose McGowan all created sensations wearing barely-there dresses. Of course, it can also generate headlines for the wrong reasons – last year when Kanye West, aka Ye, and his partner Bianca Censori showed up at the Grammys (reportedly uninvited), she dropped her black fur coat to reveal an entirely sheer dress.

It caused outrage, with some publications refusing to run images. But at this year’s Grammys the naked dress returned minus the scandal.

In fact, it was the most innovative take on the trend in ions. Chappell Roan’s sheer nipple ring dress was held up by piercings, and inspired by a 1998 couture show by Thierry Mugler. Then there was model Heidi Klum’s nude lacquered leather dress by German designer Marina Hermansera, which was moulded to the curves of her body. While striking, it did not sound like the most practical dress. “I will be the one standing and clapping all night. Standing ovations.” That’s some commitment.

Nicki Minaj gets roasted

Host Trevor Noah got one of the biggest cheers of the night when he pointed out that singer Nicki Minaj was not in attendance. The Trinidad rap star has become an unexpected and proud ally for President Donald Trump. Last week, she labelled herself ‘Trump’s number one fan’ while showing off her ‘gold card visa’ – allowing wealthy immigrants to pay $1 million and a $15,000 processing fee to fast track US residency. A White House spokesperson claimed that the card was a ‘momento’ rather than a visa document. When Noah said: “She is still at the White House with Donald Trump discussing very important issues”. He then launched into a Trump impersonation claiming: “Actually, Nicki, I have the biggest ass.”

Steven Spielberg’s grand slam

Legendary director Steven Spielberg won his first Grammy award, making him an Egot winner. That’s an artist with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. He is the 22nd artist in history to win the ‘Grand Slam of Awards’ – other recipients include Mel Brooks and Elton John. Spielberg won the award for best music film for the documentary Music for John Williams.

Best performances

For fun and camp kitsch, Sabrina Carpenter’s delivery of Manchild in an airport baggage terminal took the cake. Lady Gaga’s rock version of Abracadabra while wearing a broken rattan lampshade on her head was also a standout. And Lauryn Hill led a moving tribute to her late collaborator D’Angelo. Hill sang their song “Nothing Even Matters” and a Roberta Flack tribute performing ‘Killing Me Softly’.

Beiber’s undies

The Grammy’s stage usually is full of ostentatious costumes, scores of backing dancers, and elaborate choreography. But Justin Bieber decided to strip everything back for his performance of ‘Yukon’. Under a single spotlight and using an electric guitar loop he sang wearing nowt but a pair of shiny lavender undies and black socks. It may seem an unusual look but the silk boxers are from his own clothing brand Skylrk so it’s actually some very tactical brand placement. This means like the Beebs you will be able to wear this sateen boxers and black sock combo if you so wish. However, unlike him, it’s not a good idea to leave the house in this get-up.
