Comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short paid tribute to the late Catherine O’Hara as they performed a live show after learning of the iconic actress’ death

Steve Martin and Martin Short paid tribute to the late Catherine O’Hara at their comedy show just hours after her death.

The duo were performing a date on their Best Of tour stop in Austin, Texas, when they projected an image of the Home Alone star on the big screen and paid tribute to her as “the greatest, most brilliant, kindest, sweetest angel” they had ever worked with. The pair then raised their glasses to her and clinked them together to honor the star after her death, with the audience cheering the gesture.

Catherine died on January 30 at the age of 71, passing away at her home in Los Angeles. Her cause of death was described only as a “brief illness,” although reports suggest in the past she said she had cardiac inversus, or dextrocardia with situs inversus.

She was rushed to hospital in a serious condition before her death, with dispatch personnel stating she was having trouble breathing. Catherine had been forced to miss the beginning of production for The Studio’s second season just days before her death.

She was set to begin work on the second season in mid-January but couldn’t make it due to “personal matters.” The acclaimed comedy show has already garnered multiple accolades for its debut season, including Emmy and Golden Globe nods for Catherine.

An insider revealed to The Sun that filming for The Studio’s second season kicked off last week. The insider shared with the outlet that Catherine was meant to feature in some of the opening sequences but those arrangements changed.

“She was scheduled to film, but they reworked the schedule to focus on scenes without her character,” they explained. “It was not widely known she was dealing with any health or major issues.”

They noted that, to their knowledge, she never shot any footage for the second season. The insider went on to describe Catherine’s death as a “shock to everyone” and praised her as the “most beloved person on set.” They characterized her passing as a “loss” not only for the production, but “for the world in general.”

Catherine received widespread acclaim for her performance as Patty Leigh in The Studio. She secured an Emmy nomination and attended the ceremony in September 2025.

This marked her final public outing, as she was absent from the Golden Globes earlier this month despite being expected to attend. She also received a SAG Award nomination, with the winner set to be revealed on March 1.

Heartfelt tributes have flooded in for Catherine from entertainment industry figures, including actor Justin Theroux – who also appeared in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. He expressed, “Catherine, you will be so missed.”

Macaulay Culkin – who played Catherine’s son Kevin in Home Alone – wrote, “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Michael Keaton, her co-star from Beetlejuice, posted, “We go back before the first Beetlejuice. She’s been my pretend wife, my pretend nemesis and my real life, true friend. This one hurts. Man am I gonna miss her.”

Catherine leaves behind her husband Bo Welch and sons Matthew and Luke.
