A travel expert has shared an effective trick to help holidaymakers remember their valuables when checking out of hotels – and it involves leaving one shoe in the safe

If you’re someone who travels frequently, you’ll likely be well-acquainted with the minor irritations that accompany hotel stays. Power sockets are never positioned where you require them, the climate control remains an enigma, and every light switch appears to operate something beyond your room.

Stacey Hamilton, a seasoned traveller with Private Tours England, has lodged in countless hotels throughout the UK and abroad, and she’s revealed the single technique she relies upon when travelling, reports the Express. From protecting precious items to packing more efficiently and achieving better rest, she explained these straightforward hotel tips have spared her time, cash, and numerous dawn disasters.

One approach she employs without fail might seem rather odd, but it’s rescued her on multiple occasions. Stacey explained: “For years, I avoided using hotel safes because I was convinced I’d forget what I’d put in there.

“It sounds silly, but when you’re rushing to catch a train or heading out early with guests, it’s very easy to walk out and leave valuables behind.” To resolve this issue, she now consistently places one of her shoes in the safe beside her passport and jewellery.

She explained: “I physically cannot leave the room without realising something is missing. It’s usually a heel for me because I need them for work, but the principle works with anything you wouldn’t dream of leaving behind.

“If you travel with trainers, put one trainer in there. If it’s winter, your coat works just as well. The point is to create a visual reminder you can’t ignore.”

When it’s time to check out of the hotel, and you’ve collected your shoe from the safe alongside your valuables, there’s one additional step that Stacey always takes.

She revealed she never departs a hotel without snagging one of the complimentary shower caps.

She explained: “They’re perfect for covering shoes when you’re packing to come home.”

If you’ve been doing plenty of walking or trekking, your footwear is probably somewhat dirty.

Shoving them into your luggage against your clothes isn’t particularly appealing, and that’s where the shower caps prove useful.

“Instead of wrapping shoes in plastic bags or hoping for the best, I slip a shower cap over the sole. It keeps everything else clean, and it packs neatly.”

The caps have another purpose as well. Stacey noted: “I also use shower caps on TV remotes.

“Let’s be honest, those things are filthy. It’s a simple barrier that makes me feel a lot better, especially if I’m staying somewhere for a few nights.”
