Assam Cong prez calls for unity, accuses BJP of divisive politics

Guwahati: While appealing the people to ‘join hands for building a greater Assam’, Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday accused BJP of creating divisions in society in the name of religion, language, ethnicity, tribes, regions and river valleys, asserting that such divisive politics serves only personal interests, not development. Gogoi held a bike rally and a padayatra in the Hajo-Sualkuchi assembly constituency on Sunday. Addressing the gatherings, Gogoi raised the slogan “Join hands, build a new greater Assam,” energising the atmosphere across Hajo–Sualkuchi.Describing Himanta Biswa Sarma as the most dishonest chief minister in Assam’s history, Gogoi alleged that Sarma had repeatedly lied — about granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, about Gogoi’s alleged links with Pakistan, and about supporting Anganwadi and NHM workers. He accused Sarma of amassing wealth in the names of his son wife instead of serving the people.Gogoi asserted that once Congress comes to power, all illegally acquired properties and plantations will be confiscated and distributed among the poor. He promised revival of indigenous industries, reopening of schools where liquor shops were opened, and the establishment of a Congress govt by overthrowing the BJP regime. He said the Congress would rebuild peace and harmony, and serve the poor in the same way as former CM Tarun Gogoi had done.
