Washington: An American journal has strongly supported Pakistan’s position regarding India’s actions against the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that these steps could pose a serious humanitarian threat in South Asia.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the US publication, The National Interest, in its report said India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has introduced a new dimension to water politics in the region. It stated that the move could increase regional tensions and instability.
The journal noted that India’s “Dulhasti Stage-II” project is a direct challenge to the treaty and represents an attempt to turn water into a strategic weapon. It warned that a water crisis in South Asia could become a major humanitarian danger.
The report further stated that India’s refusal to provide water-related data violates international laws. It highlighted that the International Court of Justice has clearly ruled that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.
The National Interest added that the IWT is a fundamental guarantee for water security in South Asia. It emphasized that India is legally obligated to provide water from the western rivers to Pakistan.
The report condemned India’s attempt to weaponize water, saying it is unacceptable under international courts and laws.
