The Indiana Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee passed a bill Tuesday that would expand crime-solving tools to counties in Northwest Indiana to help keep communities safe.

The bill would add LaPorte and Porter counties to that list.

The Senate bill, sponsored by Democratic Senator Rodney Pol Jr. of Chesterton, passed the committee unanimously.

The goal is to expand the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force into Northwest Indiana.

It’s currently made up of law enforcement officers and other analysts focusing on violent offenders and gun cases in Central Indiana.

The tools help police departments create safer communities.

The task force was created in 2021 and has removed 1,500 illegal guns in Indiana.

I think it’s a nationwide issue. So when you pool your resources together, you can concentrate on certain areas of your city or your county. Big crime is up everywhere across the country, and this is a way to try and combat some of that,” said Deputy Chief Travis Cline with the Lawrence Police Department.

WSBT 22 reached out to police officials in LaPorte County for comment, but was told they are not yet able to provide a statement as the legislation is still new.
