Health Update: Health Update: Local health experts promote “Dry January” for wellness goals – What Experts Say– What Experts Say.
FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Local health experts are weighing in on the benefits of “Dry January,” the month-long challenge of abstaining from alcohol that is often part of people’s New Year’s resolutions.
These health experts say “Dry January” has several physical, mental, and financial benefits, including reduced anxiety, reduced irritability, better ability to concentrate at work and at home, and more likelihood to enjoy activities.
Cutting out alcohol for just a few weeks can also improve sleep and blood pressure according to Amber Dew, LICSW Behavioral Health Therapist at Sanford Health.
Dew said anyone attempting this challenge should tell those around them so they can offer their support.
“Just be explicit in telling your family. Say, ‘I’m trying this thing. I’m gonna try and quit, help me out… make that actual goal,” Dew explained.
She recommends having long-term plans in place even past the one-month challenge.
“In Fargo, we have a better relationship with alcohol, we’re tied to alcohol a little bit stronger here, which, no judgement, that’s just how it’s become. But we have to break that relationship just a little bit,” she said. “They are alcohol-free activities out there… you just have to find them.”
