“Off the air for 20 years, the show returns as a nostalgic yet fresh entry in the talent competition space – ready to captivate both longtime fans and a whole new generation…” a summary of the revival read.
“Each episode will spotlight the best up-and-coming performers across numerous categories – music, dance, variety, comedy, magic and juniors – as they compete head to head for their shot at stardom.
“With an arced competition structure and weekly eliminations with real-time global voting, the series builds dramatic momentum, making every live episode an unmissable event.”
The original Star Search debuted in September 1983, hosted by Ed McMahon, with frequent judges Naomi Judd, Ben Stein, and Aresenio Hall.
It ran until 1995 and was briefly revived in the 2000s, maintaining its original format with Arsenio as the host.
The show’s over 40-year-old concept launched the careers of many notable artists, including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Justin Timberlake, and Beyoncé.
While the new judges don’t have a history with the original program, which featured music, dancing, and comedy acts, their industry success makes them more than qualified for the role.
Jelly Roll has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, and several of his hit songs, such as I Am Not Okay and Heart of Stone, have topped the Billboard charts.
Sarah is an actress best known for her numerous roles in the 1990s and early 2000s, including her portrayal of Buffy Summers in the WB series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
She also starred in the cult-classic films I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) and Cruel Intentions (1999), as well as the Scooby-Doo live-action comedies.
Meanwhile, Chrissy is the founder of the food and lifestyle brand Cravings and a best-selling cookbook author, TV personality, and model.
John Legend‘s wife also has experience on competition shows, as she was the host of Lip Sync Battle with LL Cool J from 2015 to 2019, and NBC’s Bring the Funny during its one-season run in 2019.
