Food adviser Ali Imam Majumder on Sunday said that the import of rice from India had nothing to do with politics.

‘It is based on market dynamics,’ said the food adviser at a press conference at the secretariat in the capital Dhaka.

Mentioning that the rice trade between Bangladesh and India was solely based on interest of sellers and buyers, the food adviser said that New Delhi sold rice from its surplus and Dhaka procured rice to make up its shortage.

‘Not only the import of rice but also that of other items from India is linked to trade,’ he added.

On December 23, 2025, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said that politics and trade between Bangladesh and India should follow different dynamics.

There is sensitivity and naivety regarding diplomatic issues between the two neighbouring countries for which trade should not be affected, he said against the backdrop frequent diplomatic rows between the two countries over the past 17 months.

Explaining the market dynamics, the food adviser told reporters that they bought rice from the most suitable sources in terms of prices and quality.

Dismissing any possible food crisis, the food adviser said that the current food stock in the country was the highest in the past five years.

The adviser said that the food stock included about 16,96,787 tonnes of rice, 2,33,224 tonnes of wheat and 97,409 tonnes of paddy.
