The year saw Nagpur emerge as Maharashtra’s hub for AI-driven policing, transforming both city and rural law enforcement through innovative tools like AI Nirikshak and the Marvel initiative.In December, city police launched AI Nirikshak: India’s first AI-based crowd management system, on a pilot basis during the winter session of state legislature. Powered by Microsoft Azure and developed in partnership with Click2Cloud, the platform integrates CCTV, drone feeds, and real-time video analytics. It features heat mapping, facial recognition for suspect detection, overcrowding alerts, and an AI chatbot for instant access to police databases.The technology promises to avert Mahal-like incidents in which hundreds tried to take law into their hands. Though police made many arrests in the March incident, the majority of the accused managed to secure bail in absence of concrete proof. The AI-driven system, with its facial recognition feature, can erase this grey area.During the winter session, it flagged 58 suspicious objects, two unauthorised vehicles, and 389 overcrowding instances, enabling swift interventions. CP Ravinder Kumar Singal hailed it as a step toward making Maharashtra a leader in AI-powered public safety, with plans for statewide scaling.In Nagpur rural, the Marvel (Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enforcement of Reformed Laws) platform has pioneered AI in investigations. Its flagship tool, MahaCrimeOS AI, deployed since April 2025 across 23 rural stations, acts as an AI copilot for cybercrime probes. It processes complaints in any format or language, automates workflows, and generates tailored investigation plans.In December, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Microsoft announced the rollout of the Marvel system in all 1,100 police stations in Maharashtra. “The future is technology-driven policing whether in prevention or detection,” said officials, emphasising ethical AI use to augment human efforts.These initiatives enhance proactive crime prevention, faster detections, and efficient resource deployment in Nagpur’s urban and rural areas, setting a national benchmark for smart, citizen-centric law enforcement.
